HAWAII BEE FARM

Aloha!

I am in the process of growing my beeyard.
We have been keeping bees for nearly 6 years and started with just 1 hive.
After many mistakes, we have now 6 hives with 2 recent splits.

We have never used any chemicals to treat for varroa or nosema.
We have been following several great beekeepers in treatment free beekeeping techniques and can agree that these methods work.

My husband and I are hoping to give the bees in the area a better alternative to the chemical environment they are exposed to in the commercial world.

Please share my story and help me produce
some of the healthiest and happiest bees in Hawaii!

Why We Need Bees

We have 16oz jars of Pure Raw Hawaiian Honey
never processed or heated.
This honey is a mixture of floral from our South Kona area
with native Ohia trees, Mango, Avocado, Kona Coffee
and various plants and flowers, the flavor is unlike anything you have ever had, lightly sweet and so delicious.

Hope you love it as much as we do!

  Here's my latest successful split!

The queen seems to have started laying eggs.

This was going to be my last attempt at making a split.
It seemed to have worked this time.
I think the only difference was that I used
young larvaeand plenty of beesto care for them.
I also tied the hive down to prevent
the pigs from attacking.

This is a new split from last week.
They seem to be liking their new home. Added beetle traps.

Find the Queen Honey Bee( left center of the frame- she is larger and redder then the worker bees.) She may be a young unmated queen freshly hatched due to her smaller abdomen and size. Also see the worker bee to the right doing the waggle dance. That helps the other bees find the location of pollen she visited

This was not a successful split the bees left i.e. absconded.
They may have done so for several reasons:

1) too many inspections opening the hive weekly triggers this,
2) not enough ventilation,

3) too unhealthy,

4) infestation of small hive beetle took over and they decided to leave.

Things to do differently: add a queen excluder to the entrance for 2 days
and use a nucleus box with better ventilation like a screened bottom board.
Will attempt a new split from a healthy colony soon stay tuned.
